Starting this year, the cafeteria began charging an extra $0.25 for sugary drinks because of the Cook County Beverage Tax. The tax adds one cent for every ounce.

Toni Preckwinkle, Cook County President, wanted the tax because she thought that it would raise $225 million dollars anually.

Rhonda Newcomer, Food Service Director in the lunchroom, says that the tax has not really affected sales because they are still running out of sugary drinks.  Newcomer said that they have only had three students complain about the price increase.
